Brooklyn’s Peephole Seeks Advice From Fruit, Gets Juicy Remix

Apparently the unsigned Brooklyn based electro-pop duo, known as Peephole, enjoy talking to pieces of fruit…so much so that they wrote a song about it.
“Strawberry Told Me” is a an all-around cooler than thou, Prince-influenced track with a hook that you wont be able to get out of your head. Singer and “senior fruit whisperer” Kent Odessa coos the semi-retarded but inspirational line “Strawberry told me/Cranberry showed me/You never should listen to begger’s bologna(?)/Ah-hoooooo” (The the Ah-hoooooo is the best part, the whipped-cream, if you will). Berry, berry awesome!
Also check out the remix from Italy’s Lacquer, which manages to be even juicier than the original, all natural version.

Catch A Wave of Puke and You’re Barfin’ All Over the World!

Denton TX’s The Bleach Boys (not to be confused with the other Bleach Boys from the 70’s) are to the Beach Boys what The Garbage Pail Kids were to the Cabbage Patch Kids. They are a band with a killer plan and it does NOT involve candy-striped shirts or 4 part harmonies. There plan is to annihilate you with psychedelic thrash-surf instrumentals like “Pukewave” that would be perfect for a Tarantino motorcycle/werewolf movie. So Quentin, if you’re reading this…

"It’s Going To Happen" With The Undertones

Irish power-punks The Undertones came out with the single “It’s Gonna Happen” in 1981. This upbeat tune is about being stuck in a one-sided relationship that needs resolve. The drag of a situation is going to persist until a conscious decision end it. However, there might be more factors at play, as the last line of the verse admits, “stupid revenge is what’s making you stay”.
This song is blissfully vague, as pop music should be. This is one of my favorite non-punkish Undertones songs. The big fat saxophone and up-stroked guitar hints to the 2-tone ska of England’s Madness, which might not be too far off considering Undertones lead singer Feargal Sharkey would later collaboration with the group.

Sebastien Tellier’s Awesome (And Somewhat Depressing) New Song

I currently have “Divine,” the new song by French singer-songwriter Sebastien Tellier from the forth-coming album Sexual, on serious rotation. It’s a lonesome, electro doo-wop tune that sounds slightly inspired by Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys’ 70’s era music, because it manages to be depressing and sunny at the same time. Hopefully it won’t make you want to stay in bed, eat lots of cheesesteaks and bury your face in cocaine, like Brian.

VISUAL NOTES: Asobi Seksu = Playful Sex and Poppy Palettes

Many of the proverbial “Great Designers” of our time have had their careers launched by fantastic record sleeve and CD design. While these pieces are featured in countless delicious, glossy art books, we should also acknowledge that, at the core, the image on the outside is designed to support the music housed within.
So get set to rejoice over this great marriage of art and music on NYC J-poppers Asobi Seksu’s album sleeves…
The artist responsible is Sean McCabe, a one-man creative machine behind Wider-Than-Pictures design. McCabe’s designs for Asobi Seksu’s Citrus (Gigantic Records 2006), Holiday EP, and recent 7″ for “Stay Awake”, have got me all excited, visually stimulated, and downright lusting for these albums to have and to hold (and listen to, of course)!

The Incredible Edible Simon and Garfunkel and Friends!

It’s Friday so relax, won’t you? Have a listen to the silly but sweet “Punky’s Dilemna,” a trippy 1968 song written by Paul Simon and recorded by Simon and Garfunkel.
It’s a swinging tune that, oddly enough, sounds like it could’ve been written for Frank Sinatra…although, I really can’t imagine Frank singing about being an English Muffin. However, rumor has it that The Rat Pack reunited one last time at Dean Martin’s roasts where Frank, Dean and Sammy performed their own version of the song and played the roles of a plate of pasta, a bottle of Bourbon and a bagel with lox, respectively.
“Punky’s Dilemna” is featured on S and G’s classic album Bookends, which everyone should own.

You’re Gonna Freak Out in Frank Zappa’s "200 Motels"

200 Motels is an absurd psychedelic comedy featuring the music of Frank Zappa & Mothers of Invention and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra based on an album of the same name. The movie is about the bands experiences on the road and of course spoofs on hippie culture.
This movie is super strange, mixing animation and live action with a bizarre narrative from Zappa’s perverse genius.
There are guest appearances by Keith Moon (a hot nun) and Ringo Starr, who plays the hilarious character of Frank Zappa!:
High School Art Shows Have Come A Long Way

I don’t care for Joanna Newsome’s music, which is fine. But this video for her song “Bridges and Balloons,” made by a high school student, is enough to make me forget I’m listening to Newsome’s nymphish fairie chirp. Congrats to Jovana Sarver from Harrisburg’s Capital Area School for the Arts. You win the blue ribbon!
A Proper Mitzvah with Bob Dylan and Harry Dean Stanton

Bob Dylan has said time and time again that he subscribes to no organized religion. He isn’t interested in rabbis, or preachers, or evangelists. For him, the spirituality of the music is all that matters, he believes in the songs.
Perhaps that musical sanctity explains this bizarre telethon performance of “Hava Negilah.” Complete with a somewhat on-key harmonica and Harry Dean Stanton. L’chaim!
Swamp Rock Alligator Poaching with Jerry Reed

Jerry Reed wrote a song called “Amos Moses” about a Cajun boy who likes to club alligators over the head with a tree stump. Apparently, Amos’ bitterness was traced back to his father’s abusive parenting. See, when Amos was a boy his father would tie a rope around his neck, throw him in the swamp, and use him for alligator bait. That surely is enough to make one turn to a life of illegal swamp poaching.

Flamin Groovies "Slow Death" Live in ‘72!

Sunglasses, leather jackets, and long hair is what it’s all about. San Fransisco’s Flamin Groovies had a heavy 50’s blues & rockabilly influenced sound in the 60’s. Toward the 70’s their garage-blues sound evolved into what would eventually become the birth of power-pop! In my opinion, this style is due for a revival. They know how to sell the rock-star vibe that’s for sure.
“Slow Death” is a raucous tune with a Rolling Stones blues swagger about the health condition of the average rock n roller. Enjoy this live performance from ‘72!
