Hilarious: “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (Literal Video Version)

The concept of creating literal versions of ridiculous ’80s videos was started by Dusto McNeato, but this may be my favorite attempt at the trend. “Emo kid wears too much make-up!”

MP3: New Jay Reatard – “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me”

Jay Reatard’s Matador Singles collection was one of my favorite records last year, so it goes without saying that I am looking forward to his Matador album release, Watch Me Fall, this summer. The first “single” mixes the ugliness of Blood Visions with the power-pop of the singles collection…and it’s perfect for dancing around your house like a snotty 14 year old.

Hi-Rec MP3: Micachu and the Shapes – “Just in Case”

I am quickly becoming obsessed with the new Micachu and the Shapes album Jewellery.

Micachu aka Mica Levi is a London based musician, and former protege of Mathew Herbert, who creates experimental pop music consisting of her self-made instruments, household objects and a variety of influences ranging from grime to folk to electronic. Think of it as Hot Chip meets Elephant 6. Great stuff!

Apples in Stereo’s Robert Schneider Gets a Custom Guitar Made of Meteorite and Dinosaur Bone (Video)

You are pretty awesome, but you will probably never be awesome enough to have a custom guitar made of meteorite dust and dinosaur bone created specifically for you. Then again you are probably not Robert Schneider.

Andy Scott of Blindworm Guitars created this incredible “Elephant 6 Guitar” specially designed for the Elephant 6 co-founder. Check out the video:

Video: Tortoise – “Prepare Your Coffin”

The new Tortoise album, Beacons Of Ancestorship, is awesome, but like so many of their albums I listened to it for a week and haven’t listened again since. Nevertheless, they are amazing musicians (see them live!) and this new video for “Prepare Your Coffin”, directed by Andrew Paynter and JUICE, is beautifully shot. I won’t over-analyze it, just watch:

Beacons Of Ancestorship is out June 23 on Thrill Jockey. Visit their site to stream it and see tour dates.

Bill Cosby’s Disco Album! (MP3s)

Yes, Bill Cosby made a disco album. In 1977, he, jumped on the disco bandwagon and offered up a good-humored lampoon of the then music craze, entitled Disco Bill. It features songs like “Boogie On Your Face”. There is even a song called “Rudy”, which is only slightly less endearing, but no less entertaining, than the little Huxtable who shares its name. So turn on the disco ball, grab a Jell-O pudding snack and get down!

Videos: 20/20 Special on Hip Hop From 1981

Back when Hip Hop was just beginning to make an impact on popular culture, ABC’s 20/20 aired a special covering the “new artform”, interviewing such early adopters as Debbie Harry. So fun to watch!

YACHT Covers The Fabulous Stains

Though I gave Yacht a slap on the wrist for his lame knock-off of Tapeheads some months ago, he may have redeemed himself with this one. Described as “a small homage (in the form of unauthorized cover songs) to the film Ladies And Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains“, the 7″ re-imagines “Waste of Time” as a disco anthem and backs it with a cover of my favorite song from the campy classic “The Professionals” (which is sadly not available for streaming)

Stream “Waste of Time” here.

“Don’t Put Out” 7″ will be released June 16th, limited to 1,000, on Marriage Records.

Stream The New Wilco Album

Jeff Tweedy has always been a brilliant songwriter and his new album continues that sentiment. It may not be as great as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (not many are), but it’s shaping up to be my favorite Wilco record in years.

Stream Wilco – Wilco (the album) here.

The album will officially be released on June 30th, via Nonesuch.

Best Video Ever: Michael Sweet – “Ain’t No Safe Way”

God certainly is powerful, but not as powerful as a teenager’s hormones. Enter the music of Michael Sweet. His groundbreaking video for “Ain’t No Safe Way” was a staple on the Christian music video channel, Z Music in the ’90s. Sweet’s metal gem warns about the dangers of having sex–even with condoms. Too bad no one warned him about the dangers of wearing jean vests and white pants.

New Violens Video “Already Over” Featuring George Michael and Directed by Caroline Polachek of Chairlift

Chunnel just sent me this awesome new video for Violens‘ “Already Over”. The song is excellent and the video is even more so. Directed by the lead singer of Chairlift (a band whose own videos are awesome as well), it’s made to appear as though the king of short shorts, George Michael, is singing the song. WATCH:

(via Chunnel)

“Already Over” is from their newest. s/t EP, which is available on Amazon.
