New MP3: King Khan & BBQ Show – “Invisible Girl”

2413356“Invisible Girl”, the first single from Canada’s Merry-Garage-Rock-Pranksters King Khan and BBQ Show’s new album, of the same name, has a catchy ’60s bubble-gum vibe. Granted, the bubble-gum is chewy and gritty, but it’s tasty.

Invisible Girl is out 11/3 on In the Red.

Filmmaker Jarbas Agnelli makes good use of one of this father’s Super-8 home movies by syncing it to the beautiful Jose Gonzalez song “Crosses”. The combination of the song and Agnelli’s fantastic editing make it truly poignant.

New MP3: Alec Ounsworth – “Holy, Holy, Holy Moses (song for New Orleans)”

AlecOunsworthEver since I caught Alec Ounsworth (you may know him as the singer of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) perform an acoustic set of his solo material in 2006 at the now extinct Big Jar Books in Philly, I have been patiently waiting an album release. Sure I like CYHSY stuff, but this was something much more simple and more profound and intriguing. The songs didn’t necessarily rely on verse/chorus pop structure. They were more free-form and they highlighted his ability to reach Dylan-esque heights with his folk-storytelling.

This first track from his soon to be release solo record Mo Beauty is reminiscent of those songs I had heard at the bookstore. It’s a simple song with stripped-down beautiful arrangements. Hmmm, it looks as though my wait may be over…

Rip! A Remix Manifesto, A New Documentary on Copyright

Being a music blogger, copyright legalities interest me. Everything posted on this blog is legally permitted, however I do support all forms of file-sharing and video remixing and I think the industry should support it and work with it, as opposed to working against it and suing people…which gets us nowhere.

Yes, re-writing the copyright rules to fit today’s technology would be a tough task, but I along with the director of the new documentary on the subject, Rip! A Remix Manifesto strongly believe it is time to do so.

Inspired by the work of activist, author and Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig, and centered around the sometimes controversial methods of mash-up artist Girl Talk, the film dives head first into dissecting the history of copyright laws and incidents and transposing them upon our current creative landscape. Watch the trailer:

Appropriately enough, you can download the film here for how ever much money you want to pay…or for free. Director Brett Gaylor even encourages you to remix the film itself.

MP3: MEMES – “Small”

memes

Like XXJFG points out, “there is something going on in Philadelphia”. Yea, maybe it’s the fact that Mayor Nutter’s recent budget-cut proposals may lead to the destruction of the city? Or maybe it’s simply an outpouring of interesting music in the area…which looks to be the case. However, if doom should occur on these streets, well this song from Philly band MEMES could serve as the spooky ambiance before the storm.

“Small” is featured on the free comp from local label Badmaster. Grab it here.

An Album Cover That Doubles As a Theremin…

circuitcdtheremin

This is wild! Reminds me of some of the stuff I saw being created at Philly’s Hacktory by Wil Lindsay and crew…

A champion of do‐it‐yourself music making, Moldover would never hog all the fun for himself. That’s why he designed his album’s intricately beautiful, circuit board CD artwork to be a first‐of‐its kind light theremin. Moldover fans can not only enjoy his tunes passively, but actually create their own warped‐out swoops and blorps, just by tapping the CD case.
