Tomorrow: Record Store Day!
(Click to enlarge – image via Philebrity)
Started in 2007, Record Store Day is “the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances.”
It’s an awesome thing, so for those of you who live in Philly check out the fun map pictured above and try to support your local record shop tomorrow by making some purchases.
In-store performances you should check out include Kurt Vile at Beautiful World Syndicate in South Philly, and Blood Feathers at Main St. Music in Manayunk. You can also grab a new track from Kurt Vile’s upcoming Square Shells EP below:
Friday Fun: Skateboard Songs Of The ’70s
Here in Philly, it looks like we will have some pretty nice weather for skateboarding this weekend and next week. Granted, you probably won’t look as awesome as the cool cats pictured above when you ride, but these songs might make you FEEL as awesome. Check them out:
Downhill Racers – “Lovin’ Pots” (1976)
Martin Circus – “Planche de Skate” (1977)
The Carvells – “L.A. Run” (1977)
Magnum Bonum – “Skateboard” (1978)
Mabel – “Skateboard Rider” (1978)
Zack Fergusson – “Skateboard Dancin” (1978)
Listen to more, including one from T-Rex, and check out some of the sleeve art on Bootz and Glitz.

Best Coast – “When I’m With You” Video
LA Two-piece Best Coast is off to a good start with their 7″ releases and I’m looking forward to their upcoming debut album. For now, let’s watch singer Bethany Cosentino go on a date with Ronald McDonald.

Zager and Evans – “In The Year 2525″ (1969)
After watching the film Gentlemen Broncos (trailer) the other night, this excellent song from ’60s group Zager and Evans became stuck in my head. The film, directed by Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre fame, is a strange and funny film about an awkward, young amateur sci-fi writer, with an eccentric mother, whose work becomes plagiarized by a renown sci-fi novelist looking to refresh his career (played brilliantly by Jermaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords). Below, watch the opening titles of the film, which feature the song and faux-sci-fi novel covers in all their retro-future glory:
In the year 2525, hopefully we will all be floating around on hoverboards (finally!)
Tonight in Philly: Hello From the Children of Planet Earth
Are you sick of going to predictable DJ nights in Philly where they play the same shit every time? Do you want to go somewhere where you can hear familiar sounds AND be turned onto new (old) sounds?
Well, make your way over to Kung Fu Necktie tonight at 10pm because DJs Joe Patitucci and Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile producer, Arc in the Round) will be heading up “Hello From the Children of Planet Earth“, an awesome night of Spacerock, Krautrock, Synth-Pop, Dub, Instrumental Hip Hop and “Library Jams” from all over the world and throughout history. It’s FREE, and you are strongly advised to attend.
What might you hear? Perhaps some of this:
Brian Eno – “True Wheel”
Some of this:
Stereolab – “French Disco”
Maybe even some of this:
Larry Fast – “Delta Two”
Check out the Facebook event page for more deets.
Awesome Video For HEALTH’s “We Are Water”
Here’s another awesome video directed by Eric Wareheim (of Tim and Eric). This time he matches the pulverizing HEALTH song “We Are Water” with a horrific chase scene involving a brutal looking stalker and a helpless girl, which ends rather unexpectedly.
Friday Fun: Vintage Schaefer Beer TV Spot Featuring Edd Kalehoff
Check out this fun, quirky beer commercial featuring Edd Kalehoff, the composer of many news and TV show themes (including The Price is Right original theme!), getting down on the Moog — and probably drunk as hell.

Rare Music Video: Beach Boys – “Don’t Go Near The Water” (1972)
Here’s a super early music video for one of The Beach Boys’ more peculiar songs – a song with a serious and partially bleak message – that can be found on the band’s dark, 1971 album Surf’s Up.
Though they had lost most of their cache after the SMiLE fall-out in 1967, it’s still really cool that a popular band was injecting social and environmental topic into their music way before it was a hot button issue. Even more peculiar than the song itself is that the video features an additional member — Blondie Chaplin, a 17 year old South African singer/guitarist who was filling in with the band.
According to a YouTube commenter, the video was shot around a small promenade buildings adjacent to the seafront in Brighton, on May 25, 1972. But what’s one of the best comments on the YouTube page? “Don’t go near the water, when Mike Love is in it.”
