A Look Back: Robert Rauschenberg's/Talking Heads Collaboration
On May 12, the international art world lost one of its most innovative contributors. Robert Rauschenberg died at his home in Florida at the age of 82. Known for his diverse interests, Rauschenberg did not limit his pursuits strictly to the canvas of the fine arts. Throughout his life this artistic renaissance man choreographed dance pieces, composed music, founded non-profit organizations, sculpted, collaged, silk screened, photographed, and designed album cover art.
His most famous album cover art design was for the 1983 Talking Heads album Speaking In Tongues. He designed a plastic envelope package that held three translucent vinyl discs, one stacked upon the other.
The gravity of Rauschenberg's death is something that will weigh upon the hearts of millions. It reminds me of a verse from the "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" off Speaking In Tongues.
The less we say about it, the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It's okay, I know nothing's wrong
