And Now a Message From Heaven 17: Cash Money is People! It’s People!

Named after a fictional band in the movie Clockwork Orange and featuring members of Human League, Heaven 17 produced, what is thought to be, one of the first concept albums of the 1980s, Penthouse and Pavement. It was a social criticism on the day’s corporate yuppie environment.

The song “I’m Your Money” is a monetary manifesto that takes a satirical and metaphorical peek into the culture of the time, in which America’s overly-capitalistic mentality is on the rise and the line between products and people are slowly becoming blurred. The song even feels cold and robotic, like it’s subject matter. However, it’s cosmic-disco sound is undeniably catchy, no matter what the time period is.

For more yuppie criticisms, Penthouse and Pavement is available at Amazon.
