Colleen: Music for Diving Bells and Butterflies

Over the holidays I saw the best contemporary film I have seen in years, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Oh my God, this movie is phenomenal. On the walk back from the theater I listened to the French instrumentalist Colleen’s album, The Golden Morning Breaks. Think an Erik Satie composition for the music box or Bjork’s Vespertine album without any glitchy electronics or vocals. Some MBV undertones are suggested but just as much homage is paid to Debussy. Featuring glockenspiel, harmonium, cello, and the occasional loop, this album seems to have surfaced from the watery depths of a forgotten underwater paradise. This is visual music- the stuff from which daydreams are born.
The holidays may be over but tune out for a little while and pick up this record.
