Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet
Hearing Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet for the first time is like sipping an aged anejo tequila in a San Antonio roadhouse after smoking a little homegrown. Doug Sahm was one of those incredibly talented artists who influenced almost everyone into his rambunctious, free spirited style. In 1973 Bob Dylan, Dr. John, and David Bromberg were fans enough of this Texan redneck hippie to appear on his album Doug Sahm and Band while two years ago Frank Black tried his best to cover Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day. It must be difficult to cover a Sir Douglas Quintet song. Sure everyone loves to pay homage but the real deal is pretty incredible .
Have you ever seen Cisco Pike? It stars Gene Hackman and Kris Kristofferson but Doug has a role where he pretty much plays himself. This kinda gives you somewhat of an idea to the type of guy I'm talking about.
You can peruse his entire catalog over at Amazon
