Exclusive Interview with Last-Christmas.com’s Alex Liebold

Yep, last Christmas was a plentiful one for Last-Christmas.com. Five friends set out to collect, receive and subsequently archive every cover version of Wham’s “Last Christmas”. They succeeded in their mission and ended up with 192 versions, ranging from German-Country to Hip-Hop mash-ups to Gregorian chanting…there was even a version made on a Gameboy.
The gang is back this year, but will they be able to out-due last year’s splurge of wonkiness? I sat down with LC’s Alex Liebold to find out the answer to that question…and others.
Michael: Alex, everyone is dying to know…if you bumped into George Michael, in a men’s bathroom, what would you say to him?
Alex: Let it be known that I would tell Mr. Michael, with my pants on, how much his song has effected people, especially around the holidays.
No doubt. So do you actually like Wham?
Do you?
Fair enough. I really love the site, how’s this year’s inventory coming along?
Thanks! Well, so far, physically speaking we are at 120, but mentally speaking we are at -50.
Wow, sounds like an intense gig!
It definitely is, but it’s worth it. With this site we are invoking the true spirit of Christmas by giving to those in need.
And the one thing that people need is more versions of Wham’s “Last Christmas?”
More than anything.
Such a beautiful notion. So how’s the holiday traffic this year?
Beats me, my wife usually drives. Oh! You meant to the site! Sorry, I’m a little stressed out. Yea, people have been visiting again since October, and they have been downloading a ton.
Has the RIAA come after you guys yet?
Nope, and this year we took extra precautions by re-locating our headquarters.
Good thinking. Did you by any chance re-locate to Germany? I heard there is a huge “Last Christmas” scene there.
Well, I can’t tell you exactly where we re-located to, but yes, you are right, Germany is fanatic about the song for some reason. One person from Germany sent us over a 100 versions this year, ranging from Metal to internationally translated versions, pretty amazing.
Sounds like it. Are you going to send them something special?
Yes, maybe a Best of Last Christmas compilation with all of our autographs.
Lucky! You guys will probably become famous in Germany. In terms of new additions, what weird versions have you gotten so far this year?
So far, we have gotten a steel drum version, a Polka version and wouldn’t you know it…a German Rockabilly version.
What is with the Germans??
I have no idea. I think its required of them to listen to Wham as children.
Probably. So you guys had a lot of press last year, including an interview with MTV. Will you be working the press circuit again this year?
Definitely. After The Walrus, we have two big interviews lined-up. One with Fox News and one with MSNBC. For some reason MSNBC is advertising our sit down as “An Interview with the crew of Web-Phenom, Last-Holiday.com.”
PC/Liberal bastards!
Seriously.
Alex, I’m curious, has anyone in your organization recorded a version of the song themselves?
Yes. Adam recorded a version with his band, Return of the Ice-Cube Trays
Kooky. Are there any versions, in particular, that you are hoping will come your way?
Yes I’d love to hear a William Shatner-esque version…kind of a sad, spoken-word take on the song. I think it would be fitting, considering the somberness of the lyrics.
I couldn’t agree more. I hope you get your Christmas wish. In the future, do you guys plan on collecting covers of other holiday songs? Maybe launching a Halloween site dedicated to “The Monster Mash?”
Hmmm, we haven’t thought about that yet. However, someone did suggest we create a site dedicated to Wham’s “Careless Whisper.”
At this moment, somewhere, I’m sure George and that other guy are smiling.
I hope so.
Well, Alex, that’s all the time we have. So until next year, have a Very Whammy Christmas!
A Very Whammy Christmas to you too, Walrus!
