Lou Reed’s Philly Show aka No More Heroes Anymore

Thank God Lester Bangs is dead already because he definitely would have killed himself had he lived to see Lou Reed’s current tour. Let no one fool you, Reed’s show Saturday night was a buzzkill. Like an old man in a wheelchair trying to descend a flight of stairs, Reed mustered most of his pride and arrogance into an evening of pathetic mediocrity. Scolding his audience for not paying attention to a song and enlisting the Michael Bolton-styled backing vocals of his drummer, Reed framed himself as an insecure, obstinate has-been. He either should have kept up his drug habit or never started using in the first place, but it’s my own fault for putting him on a pedestal.

Lester Bangs said it best when he wrote “a hero is a goddamn stupid thing to have in the first place and a general block to anything you might wanta accomplish on your own.” This one goes out to you, Lou. Here are The Stranglers with “No More Heroes.”
