New Band Spotlight: Black Kids

I can’t even count how many times I have had conversations about music with someone and the other person at some point says “it’s all been done already.” You know what? Maybe it has. Or maybe it hasn’t. Who gives a shit? I just want to listen to music that is done well. Innovators and breakthrough artists will always pop up here and there. But while I wait, just give me some well-crafted, solid songwriting.
Florida’s Black Kids (2 of the band members are in fact African-American, so it’s not just a controversial name.) offer just that. Think Beach Boys, Morrissey, Mercury Rev.
Their demo EP Wizard of Ahhh’s is a small collection of big pop songs that bounce and glide with the help of spacey keyboards, pounding drums and jangly guitars. The vocals are always lucid and playful and as far as the lyrics it’s the same old story, boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy can’ get girl to like him, boy gets jealous.
