I just finished reading the book Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Nico’s cover of Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Keep It With Mine,” seemed the perfect match for something to listen to after ending the memoir of a man diagnosed with Locked-In Syndrome. Nico’s cover was, in fact, too perfect – it made me cry.

The depths this German chanteuse is able to plumb with her throaty baritone delve far beyond any surface-level emotion. Her musical quasi-sigh submits to circumstance, leaving her and her listeners content to except their stationary realities. Both comforting and compressing, listening to this song after finishing Diving Bell is akin to eating a sandwich after a funeral.
