Spring-Time For Loveless: Japancakes Re-Imagine My Bloody Valentine’s Classic Album

In the wake of My Bloody Valentine announcing their reunion and subsequent, sold-out-in-seconds mini-tour, every indie boy and girl is anticipating, what was once only a pipe dream, the follow up to their 1991 classic, Loveless. Until that day, let us indulge in Athens, Georgia’s Japancakes’ re-imagining of that shoegaze opus. Yes indeed, the band has recorded a cover version of the entire album.

Less spacey, vocal-less and more orchestral, Japancakes bring the album back down-to-earth. It’s obvious that the band took a tremendous amount of care while recording, and they stay true to the meticulously of the original, without creating a carbon copy. One of the biggest differences can be heard on the track “When You Sleep.” Previously a woozy, cathartic drone-gasm, the song is now transformed into a mellow hymn, perfect for a spring-time porch session.

The full album is well worth picking up. Head over to Darla Records so you can compare and contrast.
