One of the UK’s most talented young musicians Mica Levi, of Micachu and the Shapes, was profiled in a recent documentary presented by 4Play. The mini-doc highlights the band’s recent collaboration with the London Sinfionetta and features Mica discussing new music and her process.

Here’s a purty new Micachu video that features the electronic girl-wonder, aka Mica Levy multiplied against passing trees and foliage. Micachu and the Shapes are easily the best new artists of the year, but hey don’t just take my word for it, here’s what Bjork had to say about her…
“I saw her in London, in June, a year ago and I was really excited about her. I thought it was that sort of ‘do it yourself’ approach, with all these little guitars and her attitude was really fresh… think it’s really, really fun. (She)is a bit of a prankster really, isn’t she?”
Ain’t it the truth? If you don’t already own Micachu and the Shapes’ new record Jewellery, get it now.
My favorite thing about Micachu and the Shapes‘ has to be their rhythms and this new remix of the tropical “Surprise Hotel”(link to original version) has a glitchy, stomping beat that instantly makes my head nod.
It’s a little passed the halfway point of the year and since I will not be posting again until next Tuesday or Wednesday, (heading to LA for a little vacation) I thought this might be a cool post to leave you with. In no particular order, favorites thus far:
As I pointed out in a previous post, I am loving Micachu and the Shapes lately. Check out this new video for the Hot Chip-y “Golden Phone”. My guess is that you’ll be hearing much more about this band in the coming months.
Micachu aka Mica Levi is a London based musician, and former protege of Mathew Herbert, who creates experimental pop music consisting of her self-made instruments, household objects and a variety of influences ranging from grime to folk to electronic. Think of it as Hot Chip meets Elephant 6. Great stuff!
