The Kinks and Cansei De Ser Sexy: One Subject in Two Perspectives
As we know alcohol can destroy relationships and people's entire lives. On the flip side, it can certainly bring people together and raise the fun level at a party.
In The Kink's classic song "Alcohol," from their Americana/bluesy-themed 1971 album Muswell Hillbillies, frontman Ray Davies spins a tale that focuses on the former. Memory loss, demons, and infidelity plague the song's anti-hero as he spirals downward.
The riches-to-rags story is performed live in this video from the Rainbow in 1977. Watch as the charismatic song-smith sips from his flask and invites all the sinners in the audience to come along for the woozy ride:
Now on the other hand, Cansei De Ser Sexy's (CSS) song "Alcohol," from their 2006 breakthrough, self-titled debut album contains a completely different message: Let's just drink and have fun, and oh well if we all pass out!
This unbelievably charming clay-mation video, directed by Jared Eberhardt, plays in stark contrast to the subject matter of the Kink's song:
