VIDEOS: CLASSIC 70's POP FROM SHOCKING BLUE
Shocking Blue wasn't necessarily a groundbreaking group during their existence, but they did have serious pop appeal. You may or may not recognize their music from a Gillette commercial(sorry could only find the Japanese version), which featured a shitty cover version of their 1970 hit song "Venus." (Guess they couldn't get the rights to Bananarama's version either).
Check out the much better, original version:
Yes their groovy music was formulaic, akin to Haight Ashbury bands like Jefferson Airplane, but their influence is notable, as they helped to globalize the dying hippie movement of the early 70's.
I mean, how can you not like a band led by dough-eyed beauty with a commanding voice? Somewhat of a Grace Slick doppleganger, Mariska Veres had a shy presence, a big vocal style and even bigger bell-bottoms. Wail on groovy chick. Wail on, even if you bought those bells from Macy's.
Check out there pre-MTV video for "Mighty Joe."
If SB is new to you, check out The Best of Shocking Blue it's a great starting point.
