I am still enamored by this song, and even more so after seeing the video, which is made up of scenes from the 1969 short film “Clown” by Richard Balducci.
Grab a free mp3 of “Chinatown” here and pick up the band’s debut album Gemini, available on Captured Tracks.
This new band on Warp Records recently caught my attention, and I am guessing will catch yours as well. The kinetic, junkyard style funk meshes well with the frantic video editing. I feel nauseous, but you know, like in a good way.
One of the best bands to come out of New Zealand in a long time is finally offering up a full-length album this Fall. Surf City’s first single from the upcoming Kudos is a continuation of the catchy power-pop songwriting found on their EP.
Warp Records has confirmed that it will release a new album by ambient godfather/mega producer/art-rock legend Brian Eno later this year. Without Eno, works by some of Warp’s biggest names like Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada probably would not exist as we know them, so the pairing seems cosmically just. Sign up for more info about the Eno album here.
The news comes after Exclaim reported a blog post from guitarist Leo Abrahams, who wrote, “There’s an album out soon by Brian Eno, with myself and Jon Hopkins… It contains the fruits of several years of jams between the three of us. I’ve not heard anything quite like it– it sounds ‘live’ and ‘alien’ at the same time. Some things have been permitted to survive, which only Brian would have had the courage to let go, and it’s so much the better for it.” (The text has since been deleted from Abrahams’ site.)
Islands recently stopped by Art in the Age (makers of organic liquors ROOT and SNAP) in Philly for an awesome 3-song acoustic set featuring the debut of two new songs: “Shotgun Vision” and “Lonely Love”. The former is one that I have personally been enjoying lately. Check out the videos:
visit the Art in the Age blog to catch an additional video where they perform the older, but no less awesome song “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby”. The band’s newest album Vapours is available now.
One of the UK’s most talented young musicians Mica Levi, of Micachu and the Shapes, was profiled in a recent documentary presented by 4Play. The mini-doc highlights the band’s recent collaboration with the London Sinfionetta and features Mica discussing new music and her process.

The newest Broken Social Scene video was created by a fan in response to this past June’s G20 Summit. With a mirror-like montage of cultural defining clips and stills, it’s a sensory assault that features riots, political humor and everything from Top Gun to top tech.
All the tech/sci-fi nerds of the world, myself included, are waiting with baited breath for the release of Tron: Legacy, the sequel to the groundbreaking ’80s film starring Jeff Bridges. In addition to the trailers we have to hold us over, thanks to Seattle’s The End, we can now sample the film’s score provided by Daft Punk. Let the tease continue!
