For those who are drawn to the cold wave/minimalist synth-pop sound (like me), this new Captured Tracks band Cosmetics is for you. “Soft Skin”, from their latest 7″, is both brooding and ethereal…
Check out this exclusive video from Wired where “The Knife’s Olof and Karin Dreijer conduct an illuminating round-table discussion with Rostron and Sims (who are more famously known as Planningtorock and Mt. Sims, respectively) on the making of Tomorrow, In a Year — A challenging 90-minute epic based on Darwin’s On the Origin of Species.
Goddamn, I love this band!
Read more about it on Wired. The album is out 3/9.
The interview featured questions about Burton and Depp’s creative history, their children and themes of alienation. However, the most interesting segment involved Depp talking about the music that inspired his Mad Hatter character creation — specifically Sunset Rubdown. When hearing their music set to some clips of the film, it totally makes sense. Perhaps The Knife was another influence? Watch the video as he discusses the band’s influence on the character (at approx 3:20)
Oh, and what’s this…the band has just debuted a new video from their album Dragonslayer directed by “Throneboogie”, which “follows a young female warrior who is not a widow. Yet.” Will it inspire Depp’s next character? Regardless if it does or doesn’t, it’s pretty awesome. Check it out:
Let me start by saying I have never seen so many people in Philadelphia ready to bust a move. Call it a case of cabin fever from the snow that swept the city last week, but people were psyched to dance off that extra pent up energy. Over 1,000 people showed up to see Neon Indian and Memory Tapes perform their brand of psychedelic synth-pop this past Friday at Voyeur.

Yes! Devo are playing tonight in Vancouver at the end of Victory Ceremony. here are the deets via EW:
“Mothersbaugh reveals the band will perform both old material and new tracks from their forthcoming CD—the band’s first in 20 years: ‘We are going to try a few of things out on the unsuspecting populace. And we will definitely be looking for their opinion, to see if they think we should keep them, or if these are songs that should be carefully buried out in the tundra while we’re there.’ Devo will also make a new track called ‘Fresh’ via the band’s official website immediately following today’s show.”
I was fortunate enough to see these guys perform 2 summers ago and even though it wasn’t AS cool as the above video, they did not disappoint! So be sure to tune in!
Watch as the iconic chef Julia Child demos how to edit a video of an orchestra with just a few simple cooking/baking utensils and some chewing gum. Make sure the string section isn’t too stringy!
